Extent Of Arctic Sea Ice Currently Matches That Of 1980

Read the details at What’s Up With That!  Looks like the Polar Bears are safe after all.  Whew!  Al, you gave us a bit of a scare there.

Great Post. Interesting conversation going on over at What’s Up With That. I always suspected Al Gore was up to something. I have a post about Gore and the Bible over at my blog.

    Cheers.

Hello, since I strive for accuracy, I’d point out that while the photos look like 1980 levels, they are not. What we can say though is that we are exactly back at the same level a year ago in Feb 2007.

“Whew! Al, you gave us a bit of a scare there.”

    He aims to please.

(Whereas Anthony Watts aims where the target is.)

  4. Ben says:

Uh, so we’re not at the same levels we were in 1980–just where we were a year ago? Is that what Wattsupwiththat is saying in the comment above?

  5. Candleman says:

Yea, I’m a bit confused too. Perhaps the satelite photos are indicative of the extent to which the surface is covered with ice, but give no indication as to it’s depth (mass). This seems credible to me.

I think Wattsupwiththat must have looked at the linked site’s first picture and not the 2nd one. He obviously didn’t read the article.

  7. Ben says:

Booklogged: I thought he wrote the article!

If it’s not back to where it was in 1980 (indicating no long term ice loss), but instead just where we were a year ago, I don’t think that’s much of a point. Measuring ice loss over the course of 1 year is pretty pointless, I’d guess

Now, I’m not a particularly huge Gore fan, but I do think he’s basically right about global warming.

  8. Candleman says:

I don’t know if there’s enough data to demonstrate global warming. I do, however, believe as stewards of the earth, we have an obligation to conserve, protect and respect the environment. If we do this, I believe there is enough and to spare.

  9. Ben says:

I actually may agree about there not being enough data to demonstrate/proove global warming. In spite of that, my gut feeling is that is that it is happening. I think that there is enough data to prove that humans are having an negative impact on the environment and are falling down in our responsibility to conserve, protect and respect it.

I always get nervous when I read articles like the linked one because I feel as if the people writing them think that they can justify our mistreatment of the environment by knocking down the (in their opinion) global warming boogeyman.

  10. Candleman says:

Very good point Ben. Of course, looking outside right now, watching it snow again, upon more snow than I’ve seen here in 40 years, I don’t see much evidence of Global Warming at all. I’m starting to think I might like to.

  11. Ben says:

Sure, but while you’re having a more-snow-than-ever winter, I’m enjoying a 70 degree day with short sleeves and the windows open. I think extremes either way (can) indicate that something wacky is going on.

  12. Ben says:

You comment “I’m starting to think I might like to [see some evidence of global warming]” reminds me of a song by the Postal Service–a band, not the USPS :)

Again last night I had that strange dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
Where concerns about the world getting warmer
The people thought they were just being rewarded
For treating others as they’d like to be treated
For obeying stop signs and curing diseases
For mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in November

It’s interesting reading all of these comments. It seems funny to me though when people associate global warming with drought and a lack of precipitation in general. Do you guys remember back to grade 4 science and the water cycle… It really only has to be 0 Celsius for water to freeze. Now if you warm up a body of water, it’s going to evaporate, the warmer it is, the more the moisture can move into the air. Now take all that humidity and run a cold front up next to it and what do you get? Lots of snow perhaps?
