The Ringed Planet Shows Off!

Saturn lies more than 8° below Regulus as the stars of Leo rise. The planet brightens to magnitude 0.4 this month. Its rings are narrowing, and this year will be the last to view them well. In 2009, they’ll be edge-on to us.More of the planet itself is now on view. The boundary between Saturn’s equatorial cloud belt and more temperate zones is the most prominent atmospheric feature. Notice how the planet’s shadow darkens the rings’ western side. Watch the shadow slowly diminish as Saturn approaches its February 24 opposition. We can observe Saturn’s satellites and their shadows crossing the disk now that the rings – and the plane of the moons’ orbits – are near edge-on to us. The shadow of Titan, the planet’s largest moon, is the easiest to see, and Titan’s shadow begins transiting Saturn’s disk later this year.

I Have Been Elfed!

Some vengeful person has Elfed me on Office Max!  So what if I deserve it.  Of course this war could escalate.  Fair warning to all you elfmeisters.  Behold the Elf version of the men in my family.  Clearly the women are making a statement about their exposure as Can Can Dancers. So now it’s time for an encore performance of that masterpiece.

A New Discovery About Flu

Scientists have long wondered why flu has a season, which is always during the winter months.  A historical study of the 1919 flu epidemic showed that, at a military camp in New Mexico, when the flu arrived, the laboratory guinea pigs died.  Finding that guinea pigs get and transmit the flu was huge!  This opened the way for experimentation which led to the answer to the seasonal question.

Flu is transmitted in the air.  When the air is cold and dry the virus is far more stable and able to move from host to host.  Warm moist air it hard for the virus for several reasons.

The conclusion surprised me.  I thought I’d be better off out of doors, but not so.  You are more like to get the flu to and from work or school than you are when you arrive there.  Read more here.

Click on the picture to read more about the virus itself.  The move Alien has nothing over these insidious little units.
